I would really like to hear from a conservative opinion. Technically it seems one has grounds to sue Florida to remove Bibles from schools based on Florida's own policy. The Bible has some scandalous references/descriptions.
I’ll offer a conservative opinion. These things are hard to legislate. Ideally they wouldn’t require legislation. I personally have no idea how some people are okay with books like “gender queer” with its images of sex acts being in public school libraries. But apparently they are. And it seems that parents have found the only way to keep them out is to go to their representatives and get laws passed. And these laws will overreach. Because there is a line between acceptable and unacceptable and it’s different for different families. I wish people who think their kids should read Gender Queer would just buy it for their kids and not defend its presence in school. I wish schools would err on the side of not having this material present when it is questionable. But that’s not how it works today. So we have laws instead of common sense and some of those laws go too far.
Gender queer seems to be an easy call for republicans, what about Toni Morrison? Her books are being banned, but no one seems to want to articulate why
I don’t have an objection to Toni Morrison’s books. Good books will get caught up in bad legislation. It would have been better if reasonable compromises could be made. But some people will insist on making images of sex acts available to children in their schools. Parents will object. Poor legislation is the end result.
Oh, I think getting books like Toni Morrison and books about gay families out of schools is exactly what the fascists are going for. Ditto anything that teaches children about boundaries and bad touch. Double ditto books in middle and high school talking about sex in age appropriate ways. Soon schools and libraries in red states will be down to the Bible (so wholesome, that one) and the little red book of red hats: why the gop is always right and you should stop thinking for yourself, children.
