It used to be that owning property assured you the American dream bc property would ALWAYS appreciate, you could always sell in a few weeks if a new job came along or more likely -- you stayed in the same job/area your whole life and selling was never an issue. Now people realize that it's good to have flexibility for better opportunities in other places and that does not come from owning RE -- in other areas (besides NYC/SF/LA) real estate is generally tough to sell and here it'll sell but you're not guaranteed any kind of profit anymore.
