I grew up in an area with more hurricanes, so we always keep a few gallon jugs of water, batteries, canned goods, etc. on hand. Not doing anything special for this except making sure we have enough of our common OTC medicines. I'm having a hard time picturing a case where where will be some major disruptions in services, but maybe I'm not being creative enough.
My husband took a car battery to his workshop and added clips to the terminals to provide us with some light, charging, etc. That said, I still want a house generator!
Yeah, a car battery is only 12V so it will depend on the amp hours if your not running a charger to it. Running 200 watts will probably get you 3-4 hours or so. But it depends on the capacity of your battery and the load. Without a recharging plan, batteries can drain quickly with high usage. A trickle charger from a solar panel would probably be helpful to maintain the battery, but not under frequent use. That's why cars have alternators so they put a good recharge on the battery as you drive.
