Do you have a generator? Food will spoil before you can eat it all. In times like this you will wish you had married the plumber/handyman/out door rough guy with only a high school education rather than the phd guy, or the lawyer or the lobbyist.

Damn, I married that guy AND he has a PhD too!!

+1 DH is in medicine who does wood working and electrical work in his spare time. Used to follow the handyman around at his Ivy League university as he had a job managing the dorms. I have a doctor/handyman/plumber/electrician lol.

Pretty much us put together. DH was in the Marines and now has a PhD in engineering. I have a lot of medical training and practical knowledge/skills.

This title made me laugh. Of course the most obese nation in the world is worried about running out of food.

ROFLMAO! If there is a pandemic and no food delivery to your local supermarket, food will ran out after a while and you will be very happy if you have a gun in the house to fend off people that will be foraging for food in upper class neighborhoods.

For realz. I ordered a few stun guns off of Amazon for this very purpose. although if it gets to that point it’s over. If they’re coming to your house they probably have their own guns

If we get to that point, people with guns in their houses and people coming to forage with guns will get into shootouts and then die of the resulting infections.

We have enough deer in this area to feed an army, unfortunately for the deer. And we are coming into grow season, i.e. we can grow our own and forage if necessary.

DH just brought his rifles home. We don’t keep them here usually so that we can tell DD’s friends’ parents that we don’t have guns.

If you are looking for boxed shelf-stable milk, the Dollar Tree in Wheaton (on Georgia Ave) had hundreds of the 1% and dozens of the whole as of 4 pm today. I saw several shoppers with their little carts just filled with boxed milk, but the store also had instant ramen, canned veggies, pasta, rice, tuna, dried fruit, and baking mixes in high quantities.

Canned vegetables, soups, and pasta were picked over but none were totally sold out, you could just tell that other people had been buying those. Oatmeal stocks were low but again not sold out and if you couldn't get your preferred size/style, you could get a bigger box of it or 2 smaller boxes. They must have restocked TP bc even as I was walking into the store, I could see people walking out with the giant packs. They even had Clorox wipes and cans of Lysol -- again not tons but you could definitely get them if you aren't choosy about having certain sizes or certain scents. Didn't look for Purell, doubt they had that.

It was around 7-8 pm so the shoppers were the young single/DINK Arlington dwellers mostly. While a few were normal grocery shopping, you could tell most were stocking up. It was interesting that everyone was buying the same things -- canned food, PB, Ramen. Meanwhile I'm thinking -- why not get regular cereal; some frozen meals/veggies; cheese; condiments for when I get bored of my own bland cooking etc. I mean sure it's great to have some PB around, but this isn't an impending hurricane where it's all about shelf stable goods.

But if there's a power loss it might take a long time to be fixed.

But then we can complain about people “eating wild animals”.

Field dressing a dear in your front yard is likely frowned upon.

My husband took a car battery to his workshop and added clips to the terminals to provide us with some light, charging, etc. That said, I still want a house generator!

Yeah, a car battery is only 12V so it will depend on the amp hours if your not running a charger to it. Running 200 watts will probably get you 3-4 hours or so. But it depends on the capacity of your battery and the load. Without a recharging plan, batteries can drain quickly with high usage. A trickle charger from a solar panel would probably be helpful to maintain the battery, but not under frequent use. That's why cars have alternators so they put a good recharge on the battery as you drive.
