If MCPS wants to keep schools closed every time there’s snow or ice on the ground and keep the many professional development/non instructional day scattered throughout the current calendar, the school year needs to start a week earlier in August.

But it’s not that.  Teachers have asked for more non instructional days to fit in grading duties and professional development.  That they happen to put those on holidays for certain ethnic groups is just extra.  [/quote]

Same reason that we can’t have school on June 19th but we can have a makeup day on Presidents Day.
