I am totally into this show and can't wait for the finale! No spoilers please but who do we think dies??? I recall in the first episode that the older couple at the airport said "wasn't someone killed" there - which implies that it was a KILLING rather than a death by illness or accident. So the BLSM is out ? I think Rachel is not dead - too obvious and who other than Shane would have killed her. Is it Paula? The other clue I thought of is that it would have to be somebody whose body needs to be transported from Maui to Honolulu. So, not Paula's boyfriend. Also, I am in the minority on Jennifer Coolidge's character, I cannot stand her. She's SO whiny and the dynamic with her and Belinda is painful. I've actually fast forwarded through a couple of her scenes.
I'm late to this show, but I have to say I completely agree. I love Jennifer Coolidge, but HATE this character. She is so unbelievably self-absorbed, needy, and whiny. I get that that's how her character is written, but it is painful to watch. She never once asks Belinda about herself, just expects her (Belinda) to drop everything and come running when she needs her. Ugh. And her interactions with the man staying next door - CRINGE. I thought the Molly Shannon character was spot-on and it was nice to see her not overdo it. I love MS too, and was so glad to see her just play that role straight. Also love Connie Britton's character, even if she is completely absorbed in her work. Both she and Steve Zahn said some very true things and came across as so believable. I had no idea Steve Zahn was such a good actor. Did anyone else notice that all the "bad" people were white, and all the "good" ones were POC? I thought that was very incredibly blatant and frankly, annoying.
Connie Britton has a great line about everyone just fighting for a seat at the table of tyranny and I think this encapsulates what this show is about. The people with money or more power (white) abuse it but everyone else (mostly POC) are also just looking to get in on the money and power. They don’t have it so they can’t abuse it but they probably would, if they did. Kai’s summer fling (forgot her name, but the college daughters friend) is one of the worst characters IMO. She clings to the belief that she is better than the white family she is staying with but enjoys the luxurious vacation on their dime and, ultimately, completely screws over the man she is sleeping with. She put him in the position to take all the risk and made absolutely no effort to help when it seemed like he was in a position to get caught. She will probably continue to blame capitalism and white colonizers for what are actually her own actions.
Applause. I completely agree with this take and admire your ability to articulate it so well. At first, I felt terrible for her (and Kai, of course), but the more I thought about it, the more I came to the same conclusion as you. The constant glaring, offended looks she gave the Mossbachers were just so off-putting. Here they're generously bringing her on an incredibly expensive vacation and she treats them like "colonizers" merely because they're wealthy and white. And the daughter, Olivia, is just as bad. The constant virtue-signaling and snarky remarks - give me a break.
