So if I'm a September born in 2006, can I compete on a 2025 club team and league in LI? (I think I got my years right)
I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, as long as the kid is in the 2025 grade at school. The teams are based on graduation year.
Yes. Not sure I see the controversy. Some kids born in the later portion of the year are not ready for kindergarten at the same time as kids born in the early part of the same year for a variety of reasons. Carries forward if grade, rather than age is the qualifying factor. We "redshirted" our september kid for that reason. I was a November kid who was pushed forward in the old days before parents had much choice in the matter. If it were my choice seeing the positive impact it has had on my kid, I’d have rather been held back too.
I would agree if these decisions about holding back a child were done as they start their education, but I think that is far more the outlier than the norm. It has been my experience that these decisions are done often when the child is well into his elementary and even middle school years; often right before they make the jump either to middle school or High School. Lastly, in my opinion, there is a big difference between holding back a summer bday vs holding back kids that are literally born the previous Nov. That is egregious. Having listened to parents justify the reason why, while standing on the sideline of a 6th grade lacrosse game, quite frankly is pretty sad. Further, for the vast majority of these kids in southern moco attend or transfer one particular school, shows me that is where parents go when they want this route for their child. As mentioned by previous posters, it all tends to even out and possibly even stunt progress as the older kids tend to flatten out while the younger kids come continue to mature, so those of us with kids on age, stay positive with your kid, keep the, interested and loving improvement, and see how it plays out at the other end.
