My junior daughter who has never been asked and who would like to be asked was not asked again this year, nor were any of her close friends. They did not attend. She felt that attending without a date would have only highlighted the fact that she was not asked. It will take a lot more to change the culture.
This broke my heart when I read this. But what exactly is the culture that needs to be changed?
On the flip-side, my DD is at NCS and went with a date as friends. However, several girls in her friend group went without dates and they all hung out together at the dance and had a ball. The "single" girls did not feel out of place and at some point noone knows who came with a date and who didn't because it was a big party. She did say some kids who are dating each other hung out exclusively with each other but that was not the norm. Maybe what needs to change is realizing there is no stigma with going w/out a date. Wasn't NCS's hoco theme "trailblazers"? I love that my DD's friends decided to go solo and had a ball. Good for them!
