I think it does separate the show from shallow melodramas. But watching it again, the banter is still pretty shallow. And just reveals odd characters' pride (over what?). L thinks she is so great bc she grew up rich, eschewed it because she was "right," disses on her rich upbringing every chance she can get, yet takes from it. And acts like a teen brat ALLLL the way through.
Interesting, that's what I liked about the show: I could totally relate to Lorelai's complicated and irrational attitude/feelings toward her parents. I thought the show did a great job of making it clear that Emily was not a horrible person - it wasn't black and white where Lorelai = laid back and not snobby! and Emily = uptight, rich snob! Lorelai WAS an irrational brat sometime - as a lot of grown women are around their moms. I thought watching Lorelai struggle through her feelings about her upbringing and her parents was really relateable and I can't think of another show that nails the complexities between the parent/child and mother/daughter relationship so clearly.
I agree with this. There were plenty of times Lorelai was snotty, but plenty of times she stood up for and helped Emily. She was furious with Emily after the Yale dropout thing, but she engineered the make up dinner. She bought Emily a VCR to watch her show tunes. Dumped Jason when he sued their family. I mean, I could go on for a longtime here but then all I do is show how lifeless I am that I have watched it this many times.:) You have to really watch the show and you see the ways in which Emily and Lorelai equally push and pull. Like mother, like daughter. Another theory I have: Kelly Bishop played the character so sympathetically, you couldn't help but feel for Emily. Which is interesting because Bishop is on record several times saying how much she hated the concept of Emily, and she would never be friends with someone like her in real life!
