Doctors aren't sure whether it's caused by overactive sebaceous glands due to the mom's hormones staying in the baby's body for the first few months or whether it might be a fungal infection due to the mom receiving antibiotics before or after birth, which kill the friendly bacteria that prevent fungal infection. In any case, it 's absolutely okay to pick off -- but gently. Use oil or lotion to soften the cradle cap. If it's not softened, it could feel like pulling off a scab. We just used olive oil, then shampooed immediately after. It took a few days to get it all off, but babies seemed more comfy after it had been removed. [/quote]
