No, cradle cap is NOT caused by a bacterial rash. Doctors aren't sure whether it's caused by overactive sebaceous glands due to the mom's hormones staying in the baby's body for the first few months or whether it might be a fungal infection due to the mom receiving antibiotics before or after birth, which kill the friendly bacteria that prevent fungal infection.
In any case, it 's absolutely okay to pick off -- but gently. Use oil or lotion to soften the cradle cap. If it's not softened, it could feel like pulling off a scab. We just used olive oil, then shampooed immediately after. It took a few days to get it all off, but babies seemed more comfy after it had been removed.

Anonymous wrote:My 10 year old DD has had cradle cap issues since she was a baby. I did the olive oil baby hair brush thing and it helped, but it would come back. She has tons of hair now, and it's not super noticeable. But I finally asked her ped about it at a recent appointment and he gave me some ketoconazole shampoo. That stuff is AWESOME and works super fast. Like after 2 shampoos there is a huge, marked improvement.
The scrip is 2% but you can get Nizoral AD over the counter and it's 1% strength and it should still work well. Try it!
