A craft-inclined relative made a very cute sampler for each of our kids, with their name, birth date, and whimsical embroidery such as flowers and cute animals. She prepared it so that she'd only have to add the date after the birth. We display them proudly and our children love them. Yes, my son loves his sampler with flowers and cute animals. So does my daughter. The classy, non-teem-momm, non-redneck crowd can clutch their pearl till the cows come home. We decided to go the way of what we enjoy and what makes us smile, not the way of what people think.
My mom makes these for each grandchild to match any theme we might have chosen. So our daughter's has jungle animals. She's now almost 5 and we've moved and she chose purple walls and flowers/owls in her new room. Still have the cross stitch hanging up. And we did name letters in her nursery, but didn't hang them until after we brought her home. I had name letters in my room 35 years ago. Kids love having their name on things. We'll get letters for baby #2, but likely after he's here because we can't seem to settle on a name and will likely go into delivery without a name picked out this time.
