What is really so hard to explain about it? Mr. Jones was born as a man, but always felt like he was really a woman, so now he's going to be a woman. Kids will ask age-appropriate questions and you answer them in a straight forward manner, just like questions about sex. We're the ones who make it all complicated and messy, not the kids.
I'm pretty sure the surgery needed to give the illusion of fulfilling this particular desire is both complicated and messy.
And I also don't agree that surgery can make someone into a woman. Man has gotten too bold that they have the power to change whatever they want. I totally disagree. I would explain to my children that there are many people with values, beliefs, ideas, etc... that we do not agree with. Our only obligation is to treat them with dignity and respect. That's it. I would tell my child that we don't agree with the teacher, but as long as the teacher is good in their job (and doesn't surreptitiously try to espouse values to indoctrinate the kids that transgendered, etc is okay, we our family does not agree with), we shouldn't worry about their own personal choices. Whatever choices he/she makes is between he/she and his/her maker. My child had a teacher who was a smoker and as a pulmonary specialist, I felt she was pretty ignorant. My child questioned me about it and I explained that smoking is bad and that stupid people do it. Unfortunately, not everyone is smart all of the time. So, your job is to learn the material being taught and treat the teacher with dignity. We don't have to like her and what she values. You're not going to like or agree with everyone. There's bad people in the world. A fact of life. So, this is actually a good teachable moment.
