So glad I read this thread. We had to fight with our school (at least with our preschool teacher and school OT, ST and PT on our side!) for our DD's placement in a typical K environment with 2 hours a day of pullout. They wanted to place her in the ID program with 2 hours a day in typical room. We won that fight and she has been doing pretty well with a behavioral slide happening in February. I think this is because they are continuing to work on the same concepts (quote from SpecEd teacher "She is bored with sight words so every day when we work on them she doesn't seem too interested."). Her SpecEd teacher perhaps means well but doesn't do the research/work to solve complicated problems or call in help when it's needed. She is murmuring again about placement in the ID program for her since our small school has the program in house. She cited to me that this would be "good news because she could stay at her base schoool." DD is on a path to be reading in a few months by the end of K. That is not too far behind her typical peers and I don't want to place her in an environment where she isn't being pushed academically. She needs that! We have hired both a reading specialist and child psychologist to work with my DD...and are already seeing great results. On top of that, our procedural support liaison is great. She has been helpful but obviously has a lot of students and can't teach our daughter or stay on top of her case constantly. It's just exhausting for all of us and a part time job for me! Our school, unfortunately, has a few bad SpecEd teachers and is a small school...so we are stuck with this situation. I'm considering asking to place her at a larger FCPS school that has more SpecEd resources. She is the only K in her special ed room for those 2 hours a day. Anyone had any success with a pupil placement just because the home/base school their child is in isn't THAT good? I think it's time we hired an advocate too. It's all just a lot for us to do and we don't always know all the things we should be asking.
