Dogs, dogs, dogs.
Dogs are trivially easy to disable.
You don't need the dogs to attack the burglars or otherwise prevent the burglary. You need the dogs to make the burglars decide to go to the next house, which doesn't have dogs, instead.
This is a really important point.
+1 we had the police speak at our neighborhood association meeting and they said dogs are the best "security system". We have two big, loud dogs now but were dog-less for a few years and I definitely feel more comfortable home alone with the dogs.
Yet another reason to love dogs :). I have an 80 pound dog who is a total snuggle bunny, BUT when a stranger (or even the UPS guy) comes up to our house, he can sound like a very scary vicious dog. Even if he would never attack, at the very least he is great about alerting us if anything is going on in our yard or near our house. He has even alerted us to wildlife such as deer and foxes near our house -- he is that on top of patrolling things! DH and I also work at home most of the time and a lot of our cul-de-sac neighbors are retired or run home businesses. There is always someone home nearby, so we would not make a good target for any robbers scoping out our home. Plus we have an alarm system that we call our "backup alarm" since our dog is the primary alarm!
