Jesus Christ… some people here must live very remotely, or live in a dangerous place or be very rich and thus a target.

Mine, too. It's awesome Every one should have a dog. At least they earn their keep.

You live in a quiet suburb, I take it. This would be a nightmare on our busy street. Woof woof woof all day long.

How the hell would you hear a dog on a busy street? Moron.

...are you serious? if I am that guy's neighbor and the dog is barking nonstop all day, I'm going to hear it. especially if our houses/condos/apartments are connected

My husband recently started insisting on keeping our dogs shut into one of the upstairs bedrooms to protect them in case of a break in. I argued that letting them stay downstairs will probably deter a robbery in the first place, but he wouldn't have it. So, my dogs probably aren't much of a deterrent.

We have an alarm system and cameras, but those are really "limit the amount of time spent in the house" measures as opposed to prevention.

Unless someone followed you in, there was no way they could get in. Unfortunately we learned that the hard way when we left our keys inside and shut the front door which locks automatically. Not even the landlord has copies of keys. Just the way many houses are designed in that city.

I've never felt so safe and at times we had up to 15,000 pesos in the house!

What's that, like, $15.00US?

Less than 2k US.

Currently yes, but pre-2008 it was over $5,000.

Dogs are trivially easy to disable.

You don't need the dogs to attack the burglars or otherwise prevent the burglary. You need the dogs to make the burglars decide to go to the next house, which doesn't have dogs, instead.

This is a really important point.

+1 we had the police speak at our neighborhood association meeting and they said dogs are the best "security system". We have two big, loud dogs now but were dog-less for a few years and I definitely feel more comfortable home alone with the dogs.

Yet another reason to love dogs . I have an 80 pound dog who is a total snuggle bunny, BUT when a stranger (or even the UPS guy) comes up to our house, he can sound like a very scary vicious dog. Even if he would never attack, at the very least he is great about alerting us if anything is going on in our yard or near our house. He has even alerted us to wildlife such as deer and foxes near our house -- he is that on top of patrolling things!

DH and I also work at home most of the time and a lot of our cul-de-sac neighbors are retired or run home businesses. There is always someone home nearby, so we would not make a good target for any robbers scoping out our home. Plus we have an alarm system that we call our "backup alarm" since our dog is the primary alarm!
