I went to an inner-city university (with a pretty wealthy/homogenous student body) on the edges of a neighborhood that had a lot of crime (and now, 20+ years later, is rapidly gentrifying, which makes me LOL remembering how it used to be). I actually think it's safer being in that kind of environment because it's drummed into you the risks of walking alone, not being aware of surroundings, etc. I know safety is emphasized at all colleges, but at my school it was truly a matter of life and death. You think of bucolic campus settings like UVA and it just isn't as obvious that there's crime in every corner. It reminds me of people who buy houses on a cul de sac who say it's safer for their kids than being on a busy street. But you know what? If you live on a busy street you learn pretty quickly that you don't play in traffic, that you can't assume that a car is going to stop if your ball goes in the road, etc.
The perps are not homogeneous. At urban schools in rough neighborhoods (e.g., USC, PENN, CHICAGO) , the students are targeted by the local thugs seeking to steal or car jack, but that can result in death to those who resist (as was the case at USC this summer and in 2012). There aren't as many of these types of thugs at the "bucolic campus settings" of schools like UVA or SLACs, but one criminal can stay on prowl for a while (as might be the case at UVA) because the police force isn't as effective/diligent. For some reason there are more reports of student on student crime at SLACs and non-urban schools. I doubt it is just a fear/reluctance to report, but I can't explain why such campuses draw predators.
