You are very, very good to be making such an effort to keep your nephew part of his mother's family's lives.  I know it will be a struggle, but I'm sure it's what your brother and SIL would have wanted.  They chose well in choosing you as a guardian!

(And unsolicited opinion on the trust fund -- use it for the child.  I don't know many people who want their child to inherit huge wealth at the age of 21...it's a disincentive to work hard and be entrepreneurial.  If tapping into the trust can make the child more comfortable and allow you and DH to build additional family without overstressing yourselves financially, I'm sure your brother would not have wanted you to sacrifice your own retirement and your comfort along the way in order to provide what the trust is already ready to provide for his son.  Think of it that way  - it's a way to allow your brother and SIL to provide for their child.)[/quote]
