there is also a heck of a lot of daylight between Rabin and netanyahu. Israel was a liberal democratic society on par with the USA in the early 20th century (freedom for some but not all- black & native americans =Arabs)  and it is quickly evolving into a jewish version of Saudi Arabia in the late 20th century.  the truth is that religious states- buddhist (Myanmar, Sri Lanka) Iran, catholic Spain-- whatever... religious States are inherently violent and backwards.. you have to move away from state sponsored religion to have a proper functioning ethical state. not society- I think societies can be religious but the power of the state cannot get involved, religious nut jobs are religious nut jobs, it doesnt really matter what flavor of religion they espouse.
