In 2014, we had a polar vortex. Temps were below 0 and the wind chill was something like -20. Meteorologists were warning that uncovered skin could develop frostbite in as little as 5-10 minutes. MCPS opened on time. Things have changed in the last 12 years, but I’d still be surprised if we had a delay due to these temps with no precipitation.
It turns out you can wear jackets, hats, and gloves and still be outside in 0F temperatures. How do you think kids in Minnesota survive?
To be fair some people around here aren’t used to those kind of temperatures or may not have appropriate clothing.
You don't need fancy clothing. Basic winter jacket, hat (or jacket hood), gloves (or jacket pockets). Sweatshirt. Maybe a long sleeve shirt under that. You'll be fine waiting for the bus or walking to school. Those are all things people should be expected to have in this climate. Some people just don't like to be cold. And yes, you're likely to feel cold even wearing that. But if you look at what kids are wearing at the bus stop or while walking to school on a less cold day, it is pretty clear they're able to handle being cold for a little while.
+1. And if you're not sure how to dress for weather like today you should learn. It gets cold here. Not that cold and not that often, but most winters have a few mornings like today. Learn to dress for it.
