I come from a culture where the meaning of names is very important. I think that’s why names like Kylie, Kelsey, Hayley, etc just don’t feel substantive.
The original Hayley, Hayley Mills, was given her mother's maiden name. So Hayley is a surname and it is similar to other old English surnames ending in -ley. They are all place names referring to fields or meadows: Hayley--hay meadow Wesley--western meadow Ashley--ash (tree) meadow Bradley--wide meadow Hadley--heather meadow Stanley--stony meadow Kinsley--king's meadow Oakley--oak meadow Marley--seaside meadow Harley--hare meadow Presley--priest's meadow Bentley--coarse grass meadow Farley--fern meadow Whitley--white meadow Langley--long meadow
I feel stupid for believing this, but I truly thought that people only name their sons Bentley in reference to the car. I had no idea that it’s also a surname!
