What are the tangible, long term negative affects of more kids getting As? Are these kids unable to find jobs? Are they unable to perform at work if they do find jobs?
Dumbing down is not good.
But what are the alternatives? Stricter grading leads to more dropouts and more suicides. Stricter grading also makes it harder for students to get internships and jobs, and harder for them to get into law school and med school. Nobody likes grade inflation but nobody likes suicide, drop outs, or unemployed/underemployed alums, either.
This is the most important part. You’re basically blocking your students from career opportunities, fellowships, and graduate education, because you want to grandstand on the vitality of rigor. It’s stupid. There’d need to be a complete factory reset on expectations of an education at these schools. Your basically see a collapse of IB, Consulting, etc recruiting which are the main job opportunities coming out of these institutions. Yes, education first, but this isn’t really an issue of education- it’s just asking an institution to pressure academics to give most students poor grades.
