With some foods (like Campbell’s soup), I have found it right on the label after a reaction. One of the strongest reactions came from Pho places; I used to love Pho soup; especially the one place on Wilson Blvd near Courthouse metro (was it called Pho 75 maybe?). Anyway - the Pho there is delicious, for those who experience no reaction. I highly recommend it (if it’s still around). Also, I used to add the sprouts and sweet basil on the side (many people opted not to) and usually added the brown sauce on the tables; I suspect the sauce only added more MSG, but there is no way for me to be sure of that. The old Courthouse / Clarendon Baja Fresh was another place which caused me severe reactions. Learned to avoid both (along with avoiding Campbells soup and most packaged Ramen).
