inert, not invert

MSG is a rather invert substance that has been studied extensively and not found to be harmful to the majority of the population.

It is not just present in some Asian foodstuffs, but in many western processed foods.

I bet that OP doesn't actually check ingredients all the time, but that she may be sick from another ingredient, or from high sodium content. Perhaps it's an ingredient often found in Asian cuisine, which is why she thinks it's MSG. I am quite sure OP has ingested MSG in other cuisines without even realizing it, and oops - she wasn't sick at all!

Wow - this must be a new record, even for DCUMAD:

- the very first post called me a nazi / racist, lol

Because it's not specific to Asian food.

Some potato salads have MSG.

Hi!

I am the op. There was someone up-thread who said she is Asian and she also experiences a reaction to MSG. So I guess it’s possible a few folks of any heritage?

Some sources on Google suggest it’s either 1% or as high as 3% who experience reactions like mine.

I have a reaction to msg as well as soy in general - mainly inflammation and migraines.

Maybe its Bacillus cereus you are experiencing…

Thx! I will check it out. I’m the op.

With some foods (like Campbell’s soup), I have found it right on the label after a reaction.

One of the strongest reactions came from Pho places; I used to love Pho soup; especially the one place on Wilson Blvd near Courthouse metro (was it called Pho 75 maybe?).

Anyway - the Pho there is delicious, for those who experience no reaction. I highly recommend it (if it’s still around).

Also, I used to add the sprouts and sweet basil on the side (many people opted not to) and usually added the brown sauce on the tables; I suspect the sauce only added more MSG, but there is no way for me to be sure of that.

The old Courthouse / Clarendon Baja Fresh was another place which caused me severe reactions. Learned to avoid both (along with avoiding Campbells soup and most packaged Ramen).

When you don't have a reaction do you also check the label?

Same. And no it's not racist. I'm literally of Chinese descent. Some people actually have a really bad reaction to added msg.

Anonymous wrote:You realize MSG is in so much more than asian food right? If you're only feeling sick from asian food, and you don't otherwise eat a 100% clean diet, it's not MSG.

yup.

Curiously, as you point out, MSG occurs naturally in ketchup and has been added to improve flavor. Are ketchup headaches a thing?
