Whatever the case may be with Obama who I do not view as others do, as a saint, he was savvy enough to do things in a smarter way than Trump. Whatever his sins and I know there are - every President has them, you still have to keep up appearances and Obama"s success is his capability for grace and ability to communicate effectively. Trump is a horrific slime ball who has contributed nothing. He's all about Trump and this is really where the difference matters most. I'm not a huge fan of Obama but I do think he was a good leader and had the right intentions in doing his job as best as he should do. It may not have been good or right but his approach is what I respect.
Very much so agree with your thoughts on Obama and normal presidents in general. He was a POTUS, not a saint, and POTUSs do make very difficult decisions that occasionally wind up being the wrong decisions. There are a few reasons why Trump is unlike any other POTUS we've ever had and mostly not for good reasons. First, I'll acknowledge things Trump does that I appreciate in a POTUS. He's an open book for the most part. His intentions are known. He brought much more attention to two difficult and complex issues most US leaders have not sought to tackle head on in recent decades- US trade agreements with other world super powers that are more favorable to the other country and immigration/border security. His approach to these issues are misguided in my opinion but he's approached them. The very simplest defining thing Trump has done to show us why he lacks the integrity needed and expected of our Commander-in-Chief... he refused to pick up the phone or answer pleas for his help for over 3 hours while security was being breached at the US Capitol Building. He was alive, very aware of the situation and did absolutely nothing for 3 hours. His own children were in disbelief over his inaction. For this reason, he is unlike any other POTUS ever in a way that makes him incomparable to any other POTUS ever.
