Costco limiting the purchase quantity of eggs
DC area has the worst panic buyers. This is my guess why stores are running out. I’m from a northern state that regularly gets dumped on with snow. Never before had a witnessed the extreme panic buying that happens in DC before a few inches of snow is due. The bread, milk, and TP will be totally gone from all stores. It’s insane. This is probably why eggs seem scarce, but they aren’t.
It’s bc a massive supplier in Georgia that usually distributes to our area had to be quarantined and many wiped out, plus another one in Lehigh valley, plus an insane amount of eggs were stolen in central Pa from a distributor - like 40,000 eggs or something like that. So there is a sudden shortage in this area. I’m pretty sure the egg robber plans to sell eggs in the streets - but where does one store that many eggs?
And what are you doing with them? How many eggs do you people eat that this is such a problem?
There are 4 of us, we each eat 2 breakfast M-F. 2x per person per day 8 per day/ 5 days a week 40 eggs But we can eat bagels which maga apparently couldn’t do when Biden was in office and frump promised to reduce costs. 40 a week
Time to purchase your own chicken
bird flu found in montgomery county backyard chickens.
Cite your sources, excused this time because it's top search result for your post content https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2025/02/05/bird-flu-montgomery-county-backyard-chickens/
Are wild geese flying from coop to coop to make out with chickens? I don't understand how this virus spreads.
Any new baby chicks that you buy will be bird flu free, and they will be safe in your basement, back yard, balcony. Chickens held in the huge stable like farms are living in filth and at risk
Basement, yes, as they're completely cut off from wild birds. Balcony, maybe not, depending on layout. Back yard roaming alone offers no protection from wild birds transmitting virus. If you have your chickens in a backyard coop, all the time, and that coop is in a secondary enclosure with full roof and tight mesh walls far enough away from the interior coop to keep wild birds completely away, they're probably safe. I don't know anyone with this setup.
That will not be safe. It would have to be completely air tight with frequent air changes going ONLY through a hepa filter (which one could make with box fan and filters - Corsi box) and no cracks or other air - there would have to be a two door air-lock entrance to contain air and filter it and sticky mats at door and I’m not even sure that would work. If chicken kept inside completely, in a house, there can’t be a dog or cat that goes outdoors either. How would you know if the chicks you buy are free of disease?
