Um not when said sports teams are getting exceptions for real estate taxes, interest tax, deed/recording and transfer taxes. DC Tax payers are covering billionaires for all of these costs AND footing the half a billion dollar bill for the arena upfront.

Remind me how Nats Park was bad for DC? It totally built up a complete disaster of an area in the last 15+ years. Do you not think those new apartments, office parks, condos, restaurants, generate tax revenue versus the slums that it once was?

I like how Navy Yard has developed. However, it's not hard to imagine that the same development - and maybe even a bit more - could have happened without Nats Park.

Plenty of parts of DC - Union Market, NoMa, The Wharf, H St and so forth - have managed to develop perfectly well without an accompanying stadium.

Likewise, next to no development accompanied the construction of FedEx Stadium in Landover, MD or many other neighborhoods across America where new stadiums have been built.

Public financing of and other giveaways for sports stadiums are a massive scam. There is a litany of evidence out there that shows this. It shouldn't take you long to find it if you are interested in the topic.[/quote]

You are making hypotheticals. You also have no idea if Nats park was the sole driver of growth there..which it was. Union Market is a craphole, the Wharf is fantastic right on the water which was an easy win for developers (who also received tax benefits), H Street is really nothing special.

Obviously there wasn't development near LANDOVER because it's a far out no nothing town near zero public transit besides a metro over a mile away.

Look at the major cities, the areas surrounding urban stadiums are key economic drivers. I have been to every MLB stadium and the ones in the city core have fantastic amenities, night life, new development, etc. The ones in the suburbs are horrid.

The anti sports crowd is very bizarre and clearly in the minority.

DC would be a wasteland with zero sports teams in DC proper.

Well sure but the post I was responding to was touting how great stadiums are for the surrounding neighborhoods ("fantastic amenities, night life, new development") and I was pointing out that you can be standing yards away from the stadium and see [b]what still lurks[/b] pretty close to the surface of the facade.[/quote]
