I have never heard a democrat defend Clinton. He was in his second term when the Lewinsky scandal broke. Yes, there were other allegations before that, but this is the one that was irrefutable at the time. It did change our opinion of him. DocI think he did a great job as president? Yes. Do I think he was a good person? No. If given the chance, would I have voted for him again? No.

I was not alive during JFK’s time so I can’t speak much to that. Information obviously did not travel as well during that time, and I assume most people just brushed it off as rumors. I don’t know anyone other than boomers who admire him as a person. Just like Clinton, knowing what we now know, I wouldn’t vote for him.

You can’t be serious about blaming Hillary for Bill’s affair. That is victim blaming at its finest. We don’t know the details of their private life leading up to that or after. We don’t know how or why they worked things out and stayed together. Lots of people end up staying together after an affair. Do you despise all of those couples as well? [/quote]

WJC was impeached by the House but acquitted by the Senate for perjury and obstruction of justice. Not a single democratic senator voted to convict him on the impeachment charges. I may have been young, but I remember clearly he was defended on “he may not be a good guy or he may have perjured himself, but this is about sex and this doesn’t rise to high crimes and misdemeanors.”  The NYT did a roundup of editorials with papers around the country calling for censure, not conviction.

And we haven’t even talked about what he was doing with cigars in the Oval Office, yet.   You think locker room talk on a hit mic is bad?  How do you explain cigars in the Oval Office to your daughter?  Or does it not matter when it is your side?  You know what word nobody ever said during the Lewinsky scandal and the credible accusations of rape and sexual harassment?  “Disqualified”.

So yes, at the time the entire democratic machine got behind him and defended him. And it was politically expedient. WJC brought the democrats out of the dessert and was the first ray of hope on a national level since JFK. They all defended him at the time. Most notably HRC.

It speaks volumes that the only thing you can compare this to was three decades ago. Oh, other than the thing that was 6 decades ago. And you are comparing apples to oranges. Nobody is saying Trump should have been impeached and prosecuted for those tapes. The question is why his supporters didn’t care. In my circle anyway, Clinton’s supporters very much cared. What do I tell my daughters, you ask? I tell them what my own parents told me at the time. That it was wrong on every level and a complete disgrace, and that he should be held accountable. I also point out how it shattered him, politically, to this day. Notice how the DNC utilizes him very sparingly on the campaign trail, even though his presidential achievements and speaking skills are second only to The Obamas? This is because he is not well-respected within the party, and candidates need to keep him at a distance. Now your turn. What do you tell your daughters about Trump’s affairs, AH tapes, paying off a porn star, etc?

I don’t know the ins and outs of the law and how they pertained to the Clinton situation. Since it was about sex, I don’t actually know how much more they could have done. I assume they could have done more regarding the perjury, and they should have.

Whether republican or democrat, our leaders should be held to the absolute highest standard. I am not willing to make exceptions for my own party.[/quote]
