Interesting dichotomy in this thread between people who, apparently, are actually very knowledgeable on immigration law and maybe enforce it for a living, versus those who believe feel-good Hulu shows like Handmaid's Tale are reality. I call them feel-good because they are just that for a lot of the viewers. They're what I refer to as Victimhood Porn, created for people of a neo-Marxist 'oppressor versus oppressed' fantasy worldview.
The dichotomy might be between people who believe (or want to believe) that the law as it currently exists will be applied fairly, and not used as a way to persecute brown people, and those that believe that it will just be an excuse to harass (at a minimum). The Trump administration has already demonstrated its willingness to bend and break laws. Trump is on the record as wanting to use to military against 'the enemy within'. What's to stop them from implementing the equivalent of a 'stop and frisk' policy on people they feel might be here illegally? I'm a brown person. I have been naturalized for decades. I got my citizenship through my father, who immigrated in the 80s. He was sponsored by his sister, in the 70s. She came here on a work visa, then converted to GC and citizenship. The paperwork trail for us goes back 50 years, and we would be hard pressed to produce all the documents necessary to prove that each leg of our sponsorship was legal, and complied with the laws of the time.
