Smart move on their part. If you look at current marriage/divorce rates about half of marriages fail and 70-80% are initiated by women. Plus being on the hook for CS? No thanks. Happiest couples I see are childless. They revel, spend time together and seem to have a lot of disposal income. And there is no messy custody battle to deal with if the relationship ends. Marriage isn’t worth it for men anymore, there’s no tangible benefits. In most family court cases you’re in the hook for CS even if you mange ti get 50/50 custody. You’ll still have to go to court and brake that because most women don’t want to give up the extra money. Plus, having to deal with that drama for 18+ years? No thanks. It’s more lucrative from a man’s perspective to focus on career early on, build wealth and skills, invest and live out the rest of your days peacefully and quietly. During the journey you can have company and fun but as long as you’re not married you’re safe and can retire early. Kids are a financial burden, expensive, often used as pawns in divorce cases and can turn out to be greedy turds as they get to be teenagers. If I could go back and do it again there’s no way I’d do it, not a chance. I love my kids but if I couldn’t go back and time and meet my former self I’d say how much NOT worth it it really is. And since past me has no idea or way to relate I’d encourage him to just stay out of the marriage game and focus on building a career and money. Neither the “joys of parenthood” nor the “joys of marriage” are worth the mental and fiscal damage. When I was about to get married so many old guys in my unit telling me “don’t do it”, “think you don’t get sex now you just wait”, “go sit in divorce court for one day then come back and tell us what you think”, “want to know why I eat Ramen every day, ex took everything”. I should have listened but did not. At least the way it is now it seems like some guys have gotten wiser and decided to forgo marriage. They say about half of all women 18-45 will be childless and single the next few years
