Dissenting view here, but I think the US's lack of support is forcing Israel's hand. They are now going it alone against an existential threat, so they really have no choice but to attempt to destroy their enemy while Israel still has the military upper hand against Israel. If Israel waits around, it just gives Iran more time to refine their weapons, build their nukes, etc. This is similar to the story that Putin often repeats about when he chased a large rat around the "dvor" courtyard in the housing project he grew up in. He was thrilled to corner the rat and thought he won. Then the rat attacked him and he realized that cornering an enemy can actually put you at greater risk. As Israel looks to the left and right and sees no allies next to her and an enemy blocking her, she has no choice but to lunge at the enemy. Anyone who expects a different outcome does not understand international politics.
Israel cannot defeat Iran and they aren't trying to. They're trying to defeat Hamas. Whether they can do that or not is a different question.
Israel is by far a superior military force compared to Iran. Iran is funding Hamas and Israel has no illusions about the head of this snake.
Objectively Israel is the problem. Israel has launched numerous terrorist attacks in Iran, assassinations, supported terrorist organizations within Iran, sabotaged civilian and military infrastructure, bomb Iranian embassies, etc. Militarily Iran and Israel are different but one would have to favor Iran. Israel has very little capability to project a serious threat to Iran. Israel is just too small. They have like 300 combat aircraft and 160k standing military. A ground invasion by Israel is a laughable proposition. The best Israel can do is stand off and fire missiles and drones. Iran is so big Israel would run out of weapons before hurting the Iranians. Now as shown last week Iran can do the same plus they have allied forces on Israel’s border tying down all of Israel’s military. Remember Israel only shot down 25 missiles and drones. That was with 24 hour warning and a very limited attack(both in duration and intensity). The US was the one who saved Israel. Imagine if hezbollah had joined in with their 100,000 missiles and drones? Israel military is modeled after the US which requires a complex logistics, very expensive weapons systems and a highly trained force. Interestingly the US pushed that same model on Afghanistan which predictably failed. Unfortunately Israel has used its military as an occupation force. As such it is unable to pacify a small area the size of Gaza with complete air superiority and the opposition(at most maybe 10-15k) with no resupply, no tanks, no artillery, etc. Iran is huge and the distance between Israel and Iran is about 1,000 miles. This would be through areas and countries that are under Iranian influence. Any invasion of Iran itself would involve movement through large mountainous areas with long unsecured supply lines. Iran has 560k standing military with support from China and Russia. If at war that military would increase to well over 5 million. War with Iran would require the US to commit almost all its active duty and reserve forces. IDF can not win against Iran but Israel can lose.
