Wow! Does 4.0 uw mean the student never got below an A in high school? Im a parent of a ninth grader, who’s first two semesters were less than perfect. She pulled her grades up to a 3.8 average by some miracle. So she’s already shut out of uva?
Sort of. No room for error. The system has gotten ridiculous.
So sad!! 4.0 UW GPA is so unforgiving particularly if you are coming from a rigorous magnet HS with no grade inflation and taking on all AP/honors courses ... UMich and UNC are similar too.
It’s unforgiving period. Teachers are people and they teach and grade differently. They are human and have biases and preferences they aren’t even conscious of. I don’t know how ANY kid gets a 4.0 without also navigating personalities and controlling their schedule with that in mind too. It’s not just about working hard, it’s about controlling your schedule and also getting lucky. You pick French in 8th grade but the 11th grade teacher doesn’t do As- you can’t control that. Thais kind of thing happens all the time. I have no idea how anyone gets an UW 4.0 without a ton of luck.
They take rigorous classes, but not the most rigorous. The kids I know with 4.0s are very purposefully on mid-level math tracking so will taken AP Calc in 12th. AP Stats, AP Psych, APES, APUSH, AP Lang and Lit. Many avoid AP Chem and Physics.
Then they won’t get into UVA. It and Dean J have been very clear about that … for years
