UVA is tricky. You can’t tell from naviance if the OOS kids who were rejected took the courses that UVA expects them to take. The most important thing to UVA is the coursework and the grades. A 4.5 or 4.6 doesn’t tell you much. At my kid’s oos school a ton of kids are applying this year even though they know that they don’t have the coursework or grades that are needed tp get in.
What is that coursework?
This is accurate in our experience. I joke that UVA is a liberal arts university with pre-professional programs as well. Its GE requirements in A&S are numerous and comparable to those at SLACs. That’s why Dean J emphasizes the importance of not specializing in high school. Our advice to our son in HS was to take all core classes across many subjects. No fluff unless the course was a passion topic. Don’t have to AP in all science subjects; one will suffice with honors level in the rest. But… 4 years of foreign language with AP, at least 1 AP each in history, English, math, etc. UVA wants applicants to have demonstrated strong, well rounded core knowledge. AP research and its ilk is fluff. Comp Sci is fine, but UVAs program ain’t great (UMD is better). Demonstrated excellence in art, music, and/or sports is important.
