Aw, that is horrible news to hear. Such a talented and troubled man, but seemed to be finding peace recently. I truly hope this was not drug/alcohol related. Side story: rented an airbnb with a few other couples about a year ago. First night we were all chilling in the hot tub. One of the men - about the same age as Perry - went from enjoying the tub, to sitting in the edge saying he was getting overheated, to fainting and falling face-first into the middle of the tub, totally unconscious - in just a few minutes. He'd had 2-3 beers but was not pass-out drunk. It took 4 other adults to haul him out of the water. Thankfully one of the friends on this trip is an EMT, and knew how to respond - got him revived pretty quickly. He went to his doctor right afterward and got a relatively clean bill of health - says it was just a combination of dehydration (airline flight in the day before), altitude (destination was a mountain resort), marginal cardiac health, a bit of alcohol, and the heat from the hot tub pushed him over the edge. It wouldn't have been a major event if he'd passed out on land ... but passing out into the water could have been deadly if others weren't there to haul him out before he drowned.
Scary! Thanks for sharing, though, because it's important to know about. Do you know what the emt did to revive him?
My memory is kind of hazy, it all happened really fast. So please don't take this as any kind of advice or guidance for similar situations, I could be missing a lot - trained professionals are necessary. He brought cool wet washcloths and draped them around the guys face and neck. Made us all back up so fresh air could flow. I know he was checking pulse and breathing the whole time, I'm sure his reaction would have escalated if those had changed. There was more, I'm just not sure of the details. Mostly just trying to wake him up, while keeping an eye on vitals to make sure he didn't need more intensive emergency care. Friend was petty sure he wasn't in the water long enough to worry about drowning - everyone was right there, and freaked out as soon as he fell forward - it was just getting him out of that initial faint. It would be VERY different if the person spent a minute or two face-down in the water. Which is really why hot tubs need to be treated with just as much respect as pools or the ocean...
