Some people do it for nice to have money and not need to have money. What’s so hard to understand?
It's very difficult to understand why a parent would find it "nice to have" unnecessary money instead of spending time with her kids, instead of going to the kids' games, concerts, school plays, etc. If you find it very easy to understand why a parent doesn't want to have anything to do with their kids, then I think you are the one with a problem.
In my case, I would pick up tutoring jobs after school, when my own children were doing their own afterschool clubs or sports. Or a couple hours on a weekend morning, when my teenagers were.. um... sleeping in, usually. The money I was earning was probably $800 - $1000 per month and I put it in my kids' college funds. Please don't think I was working because I didn't want to spend time with my kids, or my husband.
