More police will not resolve the issue, addressing poverty, the lack of family structures and rising cost of inflation for food, and other basic necessities will address the problem. More policing leads to more jail. Once out, those who paid their debt to society are then unable to be reintegrated back into society which causes them to commit more crimes to survive. America is not a first world country because it cannot even adequately feed children, ensure that working mothers have free safe daycare and provide housing to those in need.
And what about the 3 children who will now grow up without a father? How does allowing this violence to continue (because insert sob story about the perpetrator) help the children who lose a parent to a stray bullet? If we want to act like a first world country, we need to be protecting our innocent children from violence. Guns are now a leading cause of death for youth in America. But sure, please tell me about how all these shooters just need a hot meal and a hug.
You are focused on the after effects, I am focused on the before it gets to this point. I am sorry for the loss of that father, husband, brother but that does not change the fact that American culture is inherently selfish and will continue to pay the price for refusing to have expansive holistic coverage for wrap around services, instead its made to be political instead of a basic human right.
I’m focused on the before too. We have a generation of children growing up surrounded by crime. What will be the after effects of this? I have no idea the SES of the man killed in this instance, but in speaking of broader violence, what are the long term effects on poor/working class kids who grow up not being protected from violence? They grow with fear and anxiety from the crime around them. They then see that these violent acts do not lead to any true consequences. I am totally for the things you mentioned about affordable childcare and helping to feed/house people. But we also need to be keeping them safe from violent criminals. What good is a housing voucher if your neighborhood is getting shot up? Feed people. House people. Provide them healthcare and childcare. And PROTECT them from the dangerous criminals who keep routinely being let back out on the streets.
Thousands have been given housing in buildings on Connecticut & Wisconsin, they have EBT and kids appear to attend daycare. Crime has come at the same time, in and around the buildings, in what used to be a very safe area, even in the 90s. The PSA from CP going north has had the biggest percentage increase in crime of anywhere in the city in the past few years, including a daytime shooting on Connecticut where the shooter then ran off across Forest Hills playground on a Saturday afternoon. Neither the shooters or the victim lived in The Saratoga or The Brandywine, but per MPD they had "ties" to people in both. And the shooter had an electronic key card to enter The Saratoga. Do their "associates" live in either place or do they just have relationships with those who do? A lot of crime in DC is connected to drugs and "crews" and that is not as easy to unwind as you may think. Many of the dealers live outside DC but come in. When I saw this thread bumped I had hoped an arrest had been made in what seemed to be a hit in the club. Not clear who the target was. That's the thing in DC, so many are hit by strays and no reason it could not be you, out in public, in your home in Columbia Heights or Capitol Hill, where bullets have gone through windows and walls. Stay safe, everyone.
