Harriet's Dreams troll, in the house.
You think I am trolling, and there is only one person stating the truth: “crime was higher in the 90s?” OMG.
PP, why dont you try reading Jeff’s commentary on the main page for DCUMAD. He often repeats things like “So, while murder rates were higher when I first arrived in DC, they were concentrated. . .” or how when he moved here 40 years ago, crime rates were worse.
PP, you are a troll. Grow up. Fact is: crime was worse in the 90s.
DP. What kind of point do you think you’re making? Should we roll it all the way back to the riots before we start caring?

America is not a first world country because it cannot even adequately feed children, ensure that working mothers have free safe daycare and provide housing to those in need.
And what about the 3 children who will now grow up without a father? How does allowing this violence to continue (because insert sob story about the perpetrator) help the children who lose a parent to a stray bullet?
If we want to act like a first world country, we need to be protecting our innocent children from violence. Guns are now a leading cause of death for youth in America. But sure, please tell me about how all these shooters just need a hot meal and a hug.
You are focused on the after effects, I am focused on the before it gets to this point. I am sorry for the loss of that father, husband, brother but that does not change the fact that American culture is inherently selfish and will continue to pay the price for refusing to have expansive holistic coverage for wrap around services, instead its made to be political instead of a basic human right.
I’m focused on the before too. We have a generation of children growing up surrounded by crime. What will be the after effects of this? I have no idea the SES of the man killed in this instance, but in speaking of broader violence, what are the long term effects on poor/working class kids who grow up not being protected from violence? They grow with fear and anxiety from the crime around them. They then see that these violent acts do not lead to any true consequences.
I am totally for the things you mentioned about affordable childcare and helping to feed/house people. But we also need to be keeping them safe from violent criminals. What good is a housing voucher if your neighborhood is getting shot up?
Feed people. House people. Provide them healthcare and childcare. And PROTECT them from the dangerous criminals who keep routinely being let back out on the streets.

I wonder if this event will change anything.
Kitchen Cray was a restaurant. This was a club.

I cannot believe that we make legal gun ownership so difficult in DC (rightly, and I say this as a legal gun owning household) and illegal gun-ownership gets a slap on the wrist. It's a scandal that needs even more investigative work.
I agree. I really do not understand why we can't get more funding for more policing.
I lean left, and will never vote for a conservative, but come on. Do better, liberals.
What about this incident makes you think the cause is lack of policing?
Don't play dense. At this point we need to basically double the police and crack down hard on any and all crime and vagrancy. So tired of the constant shootings.
Thanks for letting us know you don’t know what the phrase “constant shootings” means.
There is at least one shooting every day in DC. What do you think the word "constant" means?
