I wonder how prevalent this is. It's as horrifying to me as hearing there is a serial killer parent in my area (maybe this is scarier as it involves children). My kids have sleepovers at least monthly but are at an age they know and could tell me if something weird was going on in terms of abuse or inappropriate photography. When kids spend the night here it's usually more than one and they are not engaging with parents much beyond getting fed or told to put electronics away for the night.
Um, I was molested at a sleepover at age 12 by my friends older brother and never told anyone until I was an adult. Even if I had told someone, it would’ve been after it had already happened so the damage was already done. And I come from a close knit family and normally talk to my parents and siblings about all kinds of things. But this is something I suppressed and didn’t discuss for years. And this happened at my good friend’s house my parents knew her family well and I hung out there often.
I'm sorry that happened to you. I can understand keeping something like this secret. I have done the same with things that were in no way my fault but I was scared to be associated with it (scared of having blame heaped my way) so I stayed quiet. Only as an adult can I see how stupid that was as nobody could have blamed me as a little kid.
I am also so very sorry, PP that you experienced this. I have an older girl and a younger boy, but I 100% understand when people don't do sleepovers, especially when there are older brothers. Luckily we haven't had any friends with older brothers yet, but I will be very, very wary of it and speak frankly with my children about abuse in these situations.
In THIS thread you seem to think older sisters are safe?
+1 My sister was molested by an older girl in the neighborhood and didn't tell us until we were in our 40s. Fortunately, my mom just got a weird vibe about the kid (who was like 2-3 years older) and stopped allowing her to visit our house. Damage definitely done but fortunately did not go on. Pay attention to those niggling something's off feelings.
