The biggest causes of maternal mortality are hemorrhage, infection and issues related to hypertension (pre-eclampsia). The truth is Americans are unhealthier as a whole compared to other countries. A lot of pregnant women are overweight which leads to a higher chance of complications. In addition we do a lot more unnecessary interventions which can lead a woman down a more dangerous path. A long induction with pitocin for example increases a woman's chance of hemorrhage. Our c/s rate is extremely high compared to other countries and any surgery comes with a risk of more complications such as infection.
Oh but we need to force every woman to bear children regardless of whether or not she dies, according to the GOP
PP here, politicians need to stay out of it and leave medical decisions up to a patient and her doctor. There are situations where a mother's life is potentially as risk and doctors should never feel they are unable to act because of a law. Infection is no joke for example and can lead to sepsis and death if not treated in a timely manner.
