Nicknames are a sign of affection between people and have been around long before DCUM.  Also, in the past if you have many generations of "Mary" and "John" you need a nn to distinguish whom you are talking about.  Not everything is about you, Elizabeth![/quote]

What do old generations of Mary and John have to do with current use of nicknames. People use a wider variety of names now so by your logic nicknames would be less common.

Also, Elizabeth isn't a very good insults since there are a ton of nicknames for that name.[/quote]
