DD is 12 and got hers a few months ago. So far it’s not too awful but she does get emotional for a few days and has cramps and does not feel comfortable using tampons so she misses a lot of swim practices. I had heavyish periods and was anemic for decades, which definitely had an impact on my energy levels, which impacted my ability to get nearly anything done. Vitamins and supplements only did so much, and BCPs did not help at all. Only after I had an ablation a few years ago did I realize how much my periods were affecting my life. I have so much more energy now. I finally have a career. I think back on all those years wasted and wonder why there is not much more research and advances in medicine than there have been. The choices still suck and do not work for many women.
It seems there are even fewer options for young girls. I remember trying to get ready for a band concert in MS. My pants would not do up. I was so bloated. Water pills did nothing. It took my mom and my aunt together to get them done up, with me laying on the bed. I have no idea how the zipper didn't split. Being squashed into my uniform did not help the nausea or cramps, that's for sure.
