I had heavyish periods and was anemic for decades, which definitely had an impact on my energy levels, which impacted my ability to get nearly anything done. Vitamins and supplements only did so much, and BCPs did not help at all. Only after I had an ablation a few years ago did I realize how much my periods were affecting my life. I have so much more energy now. I finally have a career. I think back on all those years wasted and wonder why there is not much more research and advances in medicine than there have been. The choices still suck and do not work for many women.

It seems there are even fewer options for young girls.

I remember trying to get ready for a band concert in MS. My pants would not do up. I was so bloated. Water pills did nothing. It took my mom and my aunt together to get them done up, with me laying on the bed. I have no idea how the zipper didn't split. Being squashed into my uniform did not help the nausea or cramps, that's for sure.

Is there a genetic component to this? Does OP's DD have a greater chance of having easy periods because her mother did too?

Yes I believe there is.

I’m an adult who just spent the last two days mostly in bed due to horrific period cramps. Husband had to step up and take over.

My 13yo just got her period and we were on vacation and she wanted to swim. I helped her learn how to use a tampon and she eventually got it and was so happy and now thinks they are so much better than pads.

My DD got hers at 11 and pretty much rolls with it with no complaints, but she absolutely refuses to try tampons, so when she gets it during the summer, she won’t go to the pool or the beach at all while she has it. That part is frustrating to me because it’s been three years now it sometimes affects the whole family. But whatever, it’s a lot to get used to. Give them time.
I have a 10yo swimmer who got her period last June. Period swimwear is the way to go for the younger set.

Not so much for those swimming in the pool with her, though. Gross.

I pretty much assume all pools are gross. Periods are an inconvenience and tampons are an inconvenience, though needed to swim. I just hate the idea that because mom wants to go to the beach, the teenage daughter should be comfortable using a tampon. Talk about lack of bodily autonomy.

Interesting responses. I don’t think OP is mean. I also don’t think the super negative Tik Tok is helpful. For the vast majority of girls, they don’t need to stay home sick. Start with that as your baseline. I find it very similar to every kid who’s on Tik too that thinks they need a therapist, or tosses around diagnosing everyone as a narcissist. It’s not helpful or healthy.

If she says she can’t function, believe her.
