Increasing first gen students at the school is an institutional priority for VT, so it very well could have tipped the balance here.

I am not making excuses.  My child is there now.  That is how I know that the admissions director says this every time he speaks to parents.  I personally (I can't speak for other posters) have little respect for that school for a multitude of reasons so I'm not upset or surprised at their admissions policies; it's their school so have at it. I also have a child at VT right now.  I'm sorry you have "little respect" for the school - I feel exactly the opposite.  I would be furious if I found out they were practicing social engineering on the down low (like virtually every other university).  Instead, they're completely transparent about it - which earns my respect.  It's a great school and in such demand by many.  As you say, it's "their school, so have at it" - they don't owe you or anyone else anything.[/quote]
