Afraid we are on the deferred/waitlist/deny train.
So Va Tech is harder to get into than William & Mary? I just read the William & Mary ED thread and almost all the accepted stats are around 4.1 or 4.2 weighted with lower SAT. Some 4.0 weighted.
The stats for all enrolled are definitely higher at W&M (SCHEV). DCUM isn't the best source for drawing conclusions.
DP. Here are the SCHEV stats. The 75% at W&M is barely higher than at VT. There is hardly any difference.

Many kids with 4.08, 4.09, 4.1 ish GPA did not get into Tech. But if you google, it says their admission rate is over 70%.
Where does it say that? In-state admission is 44%

For Virginians, VT and W&M are practically peer schools right below UVA.
Some Engineering majors at VT are considered peer to UVA.

Also, many kids just don’t like the vibe at W&M and don’t even apply. For certain students W&M is amazing. None of my DC’s friends applied to W&M. Most applied to UVA and VT.

For in-state students for some majors (e.g., engineering and business), yes it is harder to get into VT than W&M. But overall - if you look at school wide average stats - no.

I'm sure that's the only reason that friend was accepted.
Increasing first gen students at the school is an institutional priority for VT, so it very well could have tipped the balance here.
(NP)
Absolutely. They have a stated goal of 40% URM and first generation.
+1. The President has said this several times. Google it
The same people keep repeating this, ad nauseum. We know. However, you're forgetting about the other 60+% of students who are accepted. Stop making excuses.
No excuses. This is a fact. The president of them only polytechnic university in the state wants 40 percent URM and first generation. The population of the state is not 40 percent URM. That is called social engineering. Many question if that is the proper role of the only public polytechnic. Read Chrinicke if Higher Education before casting aspirations. This is called a newsworthy issue so open to decays. Stop shutting down those who actually know what is going on.

Anonymous wrote:I’m in favor of offering opportunities to first generation college students, even if they don’t always have the highest SATs. If they come from weaker high schools, they should be supported to succeed. That said, there’s still 60% of the class to fill and I honestly don’t understand the deferrals on top students UNLESS the fear is that VT is the allowable state school in addition to one private school. My understanding is you can apply to one of each. In that case, the admission does not guarantee an enrollment. How to close this gap, of denying top students who really want to go to VT? Or, is it bc they want state-wide student body? I’m still a bit puzzled by admissions.

It’s a hook, as it should be. OP wasn’t implying he wasn’t qualified or shouldn’t have an edge bc of being first gen.
OP absolutely implied that when they mentioned the “lower scores.”

I am not making excuses. My child is there now. That is how I know that the admissions director says this every time he speaks to parents. I personally (I can't speak for other posters) have little respect for that school for a multitude of reasons so I'm not upset or surprised at their admissions policies; it's their school so have at it.

The PP is correct - why are you acting like they *only* accept URM/1st gen when the FACT is that the majority of students are not selected using that criteria at all? Personally, I also hate social engineering. However, at least VT is transparent about it rather than hiding this information like most other schools. They all engage in it in some form or another.
