I'm so sad, and I don't even care if the jerks here rip into me. I grew up in Virginia. I left for college and graduate school and then returned. I thought we'd made such progress. I remember growing up here when racism was totally accepted. My high school played Dixie at pep rallies. Gay people were regularly mocked. When my child was little, my next door neighbors handed out papers encouraging us to vote against gay marriage with their Halloween candy. I'm not even a really progressive Democrat. If the Republican party would stop being the party of evangelical Christians, I might have considered voting Republican--well, before Trump and that insanity. One week in and already all of this. I wasn't crazy about McAuliffe. I felt like people identify him with the Clintons, and we all know how that goes. But I admit I was complacent. I thought Virginia was pretty solidly blue--centrist blue--but blue. I voted for him, but I didn't work to try to get the vote out like I had since Trump was elected. When Youngkin won, I was obviously disappointed, but I really hoped he would be moderate. Maryland is blue and Democrats seem to like Larry Hogan. I think? But one week in and THIS. All of this already. Just why? I mean, I know why. Because politics is just a game to these people. It's just about power. But Virginia is a moderate state. Just be moderate. It's so disappointing. And after so many years of Trump and knowing the Democrats are probably going to lose next year and seeing what the Supreme Court is like now, it just makes me want to give up. I don't have any fight left. And you know what? My family has money. I could get to a state with legal abortions. Lower taxes help me. I vote against my economic interests because the Republican party literally seems evil. Democrats may be incompetent, but they aren't evil.
