Gun ownership as crime prevention is a lie. If they were actually such a great deterrent, we'd have less crime than other modern nations that have stricter gun controls, like UK or Australia. But we don't. Our crime rate is higher.
Let’s just say there are multiple variables other than guns between those nations and the US.
Such as????
Income inequality and demographics. I know it might come as a shock to you but Switzerland has extremely lax gun laws and has far less murders per capita than most countries. You could allow people to carry grenades in Geneva and it would still be a safer place than Rio or San Salvador. You cannot compare countries with different demographics, strong social safety nets, and less income inequality like the UK and Canada to the US. A better comparison would be a dystopian country like Brazil that has dramatic income inequality and is currently ruled by a fascist.
I wouldn’t call Swiss gun laws “extremely” (or otherwise) “lax.” The adult men have traditionally kept their issued army rifle (a fully automatic weapon) and a supply of ammunition at home in case the reserves are called up. But you are 100% on in citing social and demographic factors. Underscoring the impact of culture, crime (some of it brutal) has increased in Switzerland since it opened its borders to foreign “refugees” who do not share traditional Swiss values and want to make the country over in their image rather than assimilate.
