Many staff/families from McKinley want to name the school McKinley and many in the neighborhood want to name the school Reed.  Both regard their preference as "keeping" the name.  That combined with the direction from school board to avoid names resulted in an effort to find another option.  Everyone likes Westover but, plantation.  Also it can't share a name with any other school in the DMV, and better yet it can't share an obvious mascot (e.g. Discovery explorers).  I invite you to offer a better alternative within these strictures.[/quote]

Astronaut David Brown went to McKinley, Swanson, and Yorktown. Obviously they couldn’t go with Columbia as a name for the school, but I’m surprised that they didn’t dig a little deeper and honor him somehow. Who cares if Discovery has an astronaut thing going on? Isn’t it more inspirational than cardinal or kaleidoscope?[/quote]

If they named it the "Brown School" a lot of current and former parents would point to the complaints the filed agains another person by that surname associated with the school. Now Astro Academy has a great ring to it.
