I thought my contrubutions were great but this one is perfection. And no, I"m not going to correct my spelling in honor of McK.

Many staff/families from McKinley want to name the school McKinley and many in the neighborhood want to name the school Reed. Both regard their preference as "keeping" the name. Also it can't share a name with any other school in the DMV, and better yet it can't share an obvious mascot (e.g. Discovery explorers). Astronaut David Brown went to McKinley, Swanson, and Yorktown. Obviously they couldn’t go with Columbia as a name for the school, but I’m surprised that they didn’t dig a little deeper and honor him somehow. Who cares if Discovery has an astronaut thing going on? Isn’t it more inspirational than cardinal or kaleidoscope?
If they named it the "Brown School" a lot of current and former parents would point to the complaints the filed agains another person by that surname associated with the school. Now Astro Academy has a great ring to it.
Cardinals is about as good as its going to get I think though.

This is a very good question.
Did research that led to being able to combat yellow fever. With all the military base names up for review, that one isn’t on the list. But probably there’s someone in Arlington who takes offense.
Google the recent ArlNow article about naming the new elementary school at the former Key immersion site. School Board has said they don't want to go through a debate over naming any building after a person right now. That took Reed and McKinley off the table, just like it took Grace Hopper out of the running for the new school at Key.
I’m okay with this. Naming buildings after people is weird. But the name choices they have are awful. At least name it after a tree or something.

I'm a McK mom. I would be happy with McKinley, Reed or Westover. All make sense to me. I get that there's a possible link between Westover/Plantation so that's out and McK's issues. I don't understand why we can't call it Reed. But this is Arlington. We will take any issue and make it 10x more complicated than it needs to be.
