When I buy - I buy a bare minimum (the same with clothes, toys etc. We do not own a car ). And paper- I found balloons that are honeycomb shaped paper "balloons", that are in the shape of a circle and I made them re-usable by not gluing but using paper clip (when you assemble a balloon). Garlands are paper too and also re-use for years. The banner is paper and I make it myself 
The emphasis is on beautifully wrapped gift (all wrapping beginning from last Christmas is either made by us or all paper. my dd sew velvet christmas bags that we are going to use to put gift in) . And then - activities like- baking a cake, watching a movie or making pizza.

I also make paper decor myself by for example making a poster for a child "7 reasons we love you " if the child is turning 7 etc.

I am really worried about the melting ice and hate consumerism but also I can only do the right thing myself. China is producing all those crap plastic junk toys  because there is a demand. All those party "favors" are bought by parents. Argh, wish we all (humans) agreed to leave a beautiful earth instead.
