I do think that our schools are not set up to serve young boys well. The social emotional curriculum is almost completely absent. Emotional reactions like frustration and anger are punished instead of supported like tears. And most boys (and some girls) really do need to move a lot to be able to learn. The really high verbal expectations early also favor girls and boys are at risk of seeing themselves as “bad kids” because they can’t meet the increasingly inappropriate demands. Many teachers also shame boys for showing emotions like tears past K-1. There is a similar set of gendered expectations for girls that is a separate topic. But as a parent of a boy and girl school has been harder on my son behaviorally.
Most of what you ascribe to school, is actually a parenting issue.
+1 my boy is doing fine in school, *much* better than my girl. He doesn't feel suppressed. As a matter of fact, DS is in the debate team at school, and DS said that he has noticed the old white male judges (parents) are biased against minority girls. He said he noticed how they don't like when minority girls are aggressive/assertive in the debates, but when a white male debates the same way, the older white male judges give these boys points for being assertive. I told DS that this same exact thing happens in the workplace. DS said he was glad he was born a boy as they have it easier.
